The funeral wreath

A wreath is a closed circle, worked on both faces. It is the piece most often given by several people — colleagues, an association, an extended family.

Its shape

The circle is worked tight, flower against flower, with no visible gap. Seen from either side, it rests as readily flat on the coffin as upright against a support or on a tripod, depending on how the place is arranged.

Its diameter

It is measured in centimetres and given on each page. A wreath is seen from far off in a nave; in a funeral-home room, a more measured diameter sits better in the space available. Every size stays open.

The inscription

The ribbon carries the name of the group that gives it, or a short formula. That is what lets the family know where the piece comes from, without having to ask.
